Motorola has always been one of the most iconic brands for pure innovation. Moto is still a dominant brand in B2B, but it’s no longer the trendsetter it was when it launched products like the Razr. The Moto Mods program was about returning to those innovative roots and proposing new ways to use a phone that didn’t yet exist.
Moto Mods is a platform for snap-on accessories. As INNOV8 Group’s lead designer on the project, my role was to design accessories for the wider ecosystem. The flagship mods were the Hasselblad camera, the Belkin battery pack and Motorola’s in-house projector. Alongside them was a secondary, more affordable range, made up of a car charging mount, a battery pack and a game controller.
Breaking the rules of controller design
I designed a controller for the launch of the Sony Xperia Z2 as part of the Made for Xperia communication plan. It was a standalone project, and getting the grip right took a lot of prototyping. The main constraint was that the controller stayed attached to the phone, so it had to be thin. It feels very different from an Xbox controller, but the rounded edges on the back make it comfortable to play with for an hour or two at a time.
